Mental health and Work. An analysis from the family perspective

Abstract

We explore the conceptions of work and the working individual held by family members of people with psychosocial disabilities in relation to this group. To this end, we conducted interviews to identify the values and principles underpinning these views. We propose the hypothesis that two conflicting normative frameworks exist: a neoliberal framework, which entails a set of requirements for performing work activities; and the social construction of disability, which prevents individuals from meeting those requirements. This dichotomy functions as a symbolic barrier, reinforcing the difficulties of social and labor market integration. We frame the analysis within the works of Foucault, critical management studies, and social studies of disability.
